Before You Purchase a New Digital Camera

There is a great number of factors to look for when purchasing a new digital camera, but apart from the number of megapixels, brand, lens, and features, you should also consider the camera's ease of use, the media that it comes with, and its playback options.

Familiarize yourself with the camera's controls - although this might not be the most important feature of a camera, there are some odd models out there that have counter-intuitive controls, buttons that are positioned where they should not be, and buttons that are difficult to reach. If at all possible, always take the time to work the controls - if there are particular settings that you use often, make sure that they are easy to change and you won't have to navigate countless menus until you reach them. This is especially important for the digital cameras with touch screens, which lack dedicated buttons that you might be accustomed to. Keep in mind that the vast majority of digital cameras come with insufficient internal memory. Unless you purchase a camera package, you are likely to get your digital camera only with its internal 16MB or 32MB memory. This storage space would let you to snap only a few photos in high resolution and you should be prepared to purchase an external memory card off the bat. Luckily, the memory cards' prices have dropped considerably in the past few years, so you will not have to pay an arm and leg for them, but you should still budget for them beforehand. Consider buying cameras that offer magnified photo preview. This might sound like one of the last features that you would look for in a camera, but it comes in handy if you want to snap high quality photos. A magnified photo preview allows you to see your images in detail and discard the ones that do not come out as you expect them to. This is especially helpful when you use bracketing and take a number of photos of the same subject with slightly different settings, as using the magnified preview would help you decide which ones to keep and which ones to discard.

Essential Digital Camera Buying Guidelines

If you followed the evolution of digital cameras at least once every couple of months, you probably noticed that the price is going down almost as fast as new features show up. If you compare the digital cameras that were considered professional a few years ago with the consumer level cameras that exist now, you will see that the present ones are just as good or even better. That doesn't mean you can't end up paying hundreds or thousands of dollars, so you should do your homework before you go buy one. You should take the 3 tips below into consideration when you go buy a camera.

1. How much does the battery last in the camera you want to buy? The problem is that batteries aren't that cheap when you consider the speed at which digital cameras drain them. If you want to make a good investment, make sure the digital camera can accommodate rechargeable batteries. It shouldn't be a problem in most cases, but some cheaper digital cameras don't have this option. Another option that the camera should have is an AC adapter. You can consume less of the battery if you use the AC adapter while the camera is attached to the PC.

Canon Powershot SX10IS

2. What type of LCD does it have? The type of LCD screen is a very important part of buying a digital camera. This is especially true if you want to buy a camera of consumer level. The LCD is the small screen that you can find on the back of the camera, allowing you to preview pictures and to see them after you took them.

Canon Cameras - Any Good?

Made in Japan, Canon cameras are designed at the company's headquarters in Shimomaruko. They are renowned for their quality and offer excellent value for money. What are they like though?

Canon cameras are widely used throughout the profession of photography for taking excellent pictures and stills for magazines, newspapers, and even modern art and are actively endorsed for their consistent ability to create the highest standard of film quality, however challenging the brief.

Canon Powershot SX10IS

These cameras are the best choice for photographers at any level, newbie or seasoned, enthusiast or professional, and are available in many varieties starting from compact ultras to digital SLRs (full size). They are usually compared with their group-mates from Panasonic, Sony or Nikon and are so extremely well built while their support is excellent.

Canon Cameras - Any Good?

With strong roots in the film and sporting world, Canon cameras are a staple at any event where you're likely to see a group of professional photographers clicking away, their signature white lenses and red rings dominating the sidelines at sporting events worldwide.

So why should you choose a Canon digital camera? A retailer in the UK once said that he could vouch for the fact that these cameras are amongst the hardest to keep in stock due to their popularity, which of course speaks volumes in itself. Also, if you take a look at digital SLR camera reviews, you'll see that these beauties are typically at or near the top of the ratings charts.

Put all of that together with one of the lowest repair ratios in the business and its easy to see why Canon cameras are always a good choice.

The Dos and Don'ts of Using Digital Camera Zooms

The zoom lens is a versatile and creative part of your camera. It adds extra dimension to your image capture by allowing you to bridge spaces and distances which would otherwise remain as obstacles. The alternative is to run around like the proverbial blue a..e fly trying to get close enough to the action and get that shot. Here are some zoom lens dos and dont's.

Forget about digital zooming

Canon Powershot SX10IS

At the end of the physical zoom by the optics, many cameras give you the option of electronically zooming in a little more. The image quality quickly degrades and it isn't worth it.

The Dos and Don'ts of Using Digital Camera Zooms

Cropping the image

Too much headroom? Zoom in and banish it. Too much sky? Zoom in. You can crop your frame and create more focused interest by eliminating dead space from your photos.

Creating movement

Zooming in or out in combination with a slower shutter speed, whilst taking the snap will create some wonderful effects. You can generate a sense of action or motion as elements in the picture will look as if they are 'streaking' outwards, sideways, up or down.

Avoid camera shake

Be aware that at the end of the lens's focal length the image will be hard to keep steady. This is because at such distances any small movement appears exaggerated to a high degree. The way to compensate this is to use a tripod to secure the camera so it is rock steady.

Strange curves

Curving effects can be seen at either extreme of the lens so to avoid this, work around the middle of the focal length of the lens. For instance, looking up at buildings with the end of long lens, it may appear to bend inward considerably.

The zoom is a dynamic tool for image creation if it is used wisely.

Digital verses Optical Zoom

When buying a digital camera in today's market one of the factors that you will undoubtedly be looking at the power of the zoom function. Unfortunately people who are not so experience in this field are starting to be a little mislead. Manufacturers are claiming a zoom function called digital zoom, or they are adding up the total zoom of there optical zoom and digital zoom for a total zoom function. This however is a little unfair on the consumer as you will begin to see in this article.

What is Optical Zoom?

Canon Powershot SX10IS

Optical zoom is what I like to call true zoom. This function of a camera uses the lens within the camera to draw the image closer. Using the optics of the camera the image is bought forward much the same way as a magnifying glass, binoculars and other such instruments. When using optical zoom quality remains the same and the full resolution of the camera can be used on the zoomed image.

Digital verses Optical Zoom

What is Digital Zoom?

Digital zoom on the other hand is not a true form of a zoom function. The image itself doesn't actually come any closer as the optics in the camera stay the same. The way the digital zoom works is much the same way as it does on your PC at home. The idea behind digital zoom is that it takes a portion of the image and expand that image to the full size of the image. What happens here is that the section of image that you are looking at becomes bigger, not closer. The image does look closer because it has been expanded however all that has happened is that the image quality has been reduced.
There is nothing a digital camera can do that you can't do on any standard art package at home. You may as well take the picture like you would a normal camera and then alter the zoom to exactly the way you want it at home. It will be no better or worse doing it this way that it would using a digital zoom function.

Why use Digital Zoom?

So why would you ever want a digital zoom? Well there are some occasions when this may be useful. Firstly for those of you who don't like computers or are unsure about using photo editing software then the digital zoom function will enable you to get an accurate shot of the specific area you wish to photograph.

The second reason may be that you don't wish to print the pictures out. If this is the case then the digital zoom may not affect your image quality as much as a it would on a printed image. One final reason for digital zoom is that you may be able to see what the subject is doing through the camera a little easier while looking at the screen through digital zoom. Unfortunately with digital zoom, what you see on the screen is usually a little better quality than the final image.

How would you compare digital cameras

If you are comparing digital cameras in the shop or on the internet ready to make a purchase then in terms of the zoom function its only really worth looking at the optical zoom. Comparing digital zoom is a little bit of a waste of time as like I stated before you can alter the amount of digital zoom in any major art package after the photo has been taken very easily.

The only zoom to compare is optical zoom of one camera to the optical zoom of another. You will probably find a price bracket difference between the cameras with the different levels of optical zoom. You should also watch out for the manufacturers who advertise the total zoom. Although these cameras have an optical zoom function its only part of the total and you should research the camera more thoroughly to get the optical zoom value.

The Best Zoom Digital Camera Shopping Guide

A generous zoom range is very important for any photographer and in the last period of time every single manufacturer added at least one or two models with super zoom in the line-up.

The opportunity to shoot every image you see is very appealing especially if you can do that using a compact digital camera. The market is filled with models that will make all this possible, all you need to do is take some time and find the one that suits you best. Below you'll find a brief description of seven cameras and their design and performance features.

Canon Powershot SX10IS

Compared to an SLR, a camera that has a small sensor has also smaller lens and this means that it can offer up to a 12x zoom.

The Best Zoom Digital Camera Shopping Guide

A few years ago, both Olympus and Sony introduced on the market 10x zoom cameras but they were very expensive. Today, modern zoom cameras are pretty affordable and much smaller compared to the digital SLRs that feature powerful lenses. These two major advantages made the super zoom cameras very popular.

These great devices offer very generous zoom ranges and that's why in most cases the lenses are very large and tend to occupy a large part of the camera. A superzoom cam looks very much like a SLR but the true differences between them lie on the inside and can be seem very clearly in the pictures.

In time, the zoom range extended from an average 10x to almost double that number but during this battle for pixel's supremacy the lens became wider and wider.

These seven models go from average wide angle to super telephoto and all of them feature 12x zoom ranges. On the inside you can find a mechanical or an optical image stabilization which is very helpful when shooting splendid images. In addition to all that the cameras sport full photographic control, electronic viewfinders and a rather attractive design.

The specs lists for each model say that some of the cameras actually share the same lens and that's mainly because the lenses are provided by a third party supplier.

Panasonic was not the first SLR superzoom camera manufacturer but everyone heard about its 2003 / 2004 models: the FZ20 and the FZ10. And that was only the beginning because in time all major manufacturers joined the game and now they compete for the podium.

During the above mentioned test the following superzooms were analyzed: the Sony Cybershot DSC-H50, the Canon Powershot SX10 IS, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28, the Fujifilm FinePix S2000HD, the Olympus SP-565UZ, the Fujifilm FinePix S8100fd and the Nikon Coolpix P80.

The 20x zooming feature at 560mm elongating lens is what sets apart the Powershot SX10 from other and preceding digital cameras. Canon Powershot SX10IS 10MP Digital Camera - Does it Measure Up?

If you are looking to buy a Canon Powershot SX10IS 10MP Digital Camera with 20x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom then you have arrived at the right place, you will not get all the fluff, that the normal review sites, will give you. You will get research based upon extensive user feedback from the people who have actually used and abused this product, that coupled with a genuine rating of whether we consider the product to be worthy of the purchase price. I will try and point out, what was considered to be whats good about this product and what was not so good, based upon real people with no axes to grind...

Pros

Canon Powershot SX10IS

First off the camera felt very solidly built, if not a little heavy for a point and shoot model, but it did however feel well balanced throughout.

Canon Powershot SX10IS 10MP Digital Camera - Does it Measure Up?

The SX10 IS stood up adequately to heavy usage, giving no issues, the controls are intuitively placed also. The 2.5" LCD screen is standard, but if I am honest, I would like to have seen a 3" screen for that little extra, and of course you would expect for the screen to pivot for easy viewing of subject (self portrait for example). What was very useful was the speed at which the unit booted up and was ready to shoot and it was also mentioned how useful the low battery warning was utilized, surprising how often , you can get caught out. As for the picture, well the 20x Optical zoom was considered more than acceptable. especially when used in conjunction with image stabilization function, that I know is available on less expensive Canon products, namely the Canon 1100 IS 8MP.

Cons

The feedback was less enthusiastic with the lack of grip on this unit, very slippery in damp conditions, which doesn't help if the subject is moving. Although the controls are intuitive the menu is far from that, proving a little messy, when it was un-familiar. The built in flash is pretty poor, but OK for day to day use, or in emergencies, this will often depend upon your own needs and wants. Pictures taken in low light, could be better, this is because of the densely packed pixels on the sensor, any ISO over 200/400 is un-usable.

Our Research on the Canon Powershot SX10 IS 10mp Digital Camera Suggests:

This product is proving to be a worthy successor to the S-series and G-series before that, it appears to have taken the minor concerns with those previous models and improved upon them, however as a result, it has a few concerns of its own, that you might find disappointing. If I were looking for a digital camera with excellent viewing Verdict: If you are looking for a digital camera, that is capable of giving you results that can hack it with the big boys (digital SLR), then you just might of found it.

Canon Powershot SX10IS 10MP Digital Camera - An Unbiased Review

Specifications: The Canon Powershot SX10IS 10MP digital camera is an excellent mega-zoom camera with a powerful 20x optical zoom (that boasts quiet zooming and a new improved zooming speed) for you to get closer to the action. It also has a 10MP image sensor for taking high-resolution images. It has a 2.5" LCD display that can be rotated and is powered by Canon's DIGIC 4 processor. This model ships with a lens cap, a lens hood, a user guide, interface cable, neck strap 4 AA alkaline batteries and a stereo video cable.

Design: The Canon Powershot SX10IS 10MP digital camera has a big comfortable grip (that houses the 4 AA batteries). The rotating LCD screen is a nice feature, but I personally think that it should not have compromised on the size of the screen (I love large display screens). It has a rotating dial on the back for selecting various modes (similar to Apple's navigation wheel). It also has a dedicated button for recording VGA videos.

Canon PowerShot SX10IS Review

I upgraded to SX10IS from the prior S5IS model, and I must say that it was definitely worth it. I should mention that I'm in no way a power user, a professional photographer. I don't make my living off this camera, but I am very fond of photography as a hobby. I need good quality photos without much hassle, and I am quite picky about this!

This model comes with lots of nifty features, but there is still lots of room for improvement. I will start off by showing the pros, the reasons I fell in love with this camera.

Canon Powershot SX10IS

- Proper face recognition. The feature kicks in from the default settings, no need to adjust anything. Point to your friends, click the shutter button and the camera will figure out the faces and adjust the lighting.
- Intelligent red eye removal, without the use of an extra reduction lamp or pre-flasher
- Memory card door is now separated from the battery door. At times I just want to take out the card from my camera and replace it with a blank one. With previous models I had to switch the camera off, remove the batteries, then remove the card. I was wasting precious seconds.
- This model beats its competitors at the quality of pictures at high ISO settings. With the continuous improvement from model to model since early versions, this was quite expected.

Now let's get to the downsides.

- I would like to see a bigger rotating display. Granted, it's usable as it is now, but having it half an inch larger would be so much better.
- The compression of movies leads to loss of quality. I would like to have an option that would allow me to choose the level of compression and warn me about the possible losses. Right now it doesn't say anything. I haven't used it much for film making though, maybe the reduction in quality was just a wild opinion. However, this is definitely worth testing before you buy the camera.
- The shape is a bit boxy and the grip is a bit abrupt. However, this is a matter of personal taste, you might like it this way.

All in all, the SX10IS is a great model, suitable for all low to middle end camera users. The set of features it comes with are easy to understand by even the most un-techie photographer.
